8Sinn has recently introduced a new cage model that is designed specifically for the Leica SL2 and SL2-S cameras. It provides several 1/4”-20, 3/8”-16, and M4 mounting points as well as a cold shoe mount, while keeping your setup simple and clean. It is now available for pre-order for $169.
The Leica SL2 and SL2-S keep getting better with every firmware update. Just a few weeks ago, the SL2-S gained 4K60 ProRes RAW recording over HDMI when paired with an Atomos Ninja V/V+, along with several improvements for both stills and video.
Although Leica cameras are well-known for having comfortable ergonomics, filmmakers often appreciate having additional mounting points for rigging accessories. Hence, Polish manufacturer 8Sinn came up with a solution to meet the demands of Leica video shooters. Let’s take a closer look.
The new 8Sinn cage for the Leica SL2 and SL2-S is made of a single piece of aluminum. As a consequence, its lightweight construction will only add 198g to your camera build. The cage seems to nicely wrap around the body, while still granting access to the camera’s controls, ports, as well as top and rear screens.
When attaching the cage to the SL2/SL2-S, the top native hot shoe mount remains free and your camera build gains an extra cold shoe mount on the top left side of the body. Moreover, if you like having your camera hanging from your neck, you can use the two strap holders on the cage to attach a camera strap.
The cage has a simple design overall and offers several mounting points for accessories. 1/4”-20 threads can be found on all sides, while 3/8”-16 mounting points with ARRI locating pins populate the top, bottom, and right side of the rig. Moreover, M4 accessories can be screwed to the front or on the side.
The new 8Sinn cage for Leica SL2 and SL2-S is now available for pre-order from the manufacturer’s website. Its official retail price is $169. If you’d like to include a HDMI/USB-C cable clamp, then you need to add $39.
Finally, the company offers three different kits that include a top handle. Their price varies, depending on the chosen top handle model:
Have you ever shot on the Leica SL2/SL2-S? How do you like the ergonomics of these cameras? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
