Canon EOS M50 Mark II Announced - Vlogging Camera Updated

If It Works, Don’t Fix It

The Canon EOS M50 came out in 2018, and my colleague Nino did an in-depth review of this great little camera for vloggers and content creators that you can watch here.

The Canon EOS M50 Mark II is the successor, but has a lot of similarities with its older brother, including:

The same 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 8 image processor

An EF-M lens mount, compatible with EF and EF-S lenses via an optional adapter

10 frames per second continuous shooting

4K UHD recording at up to 23.98fps (with a heavy sensor crop), FullHD at up to 60fps, and HD at 120p for slow motion. Video recordings are limited to 29 minutes and 59 seconds per clip

No C-Log/Wide DR picture profile; you only get access to auto, standard, portrait, landscape, fine detail, neutral, faithful, monochrome, and User Defined 1–3

5-axis Digital image stabilization is available in video mode

The camera features a large 3.0″ touchscreen LCD as well as a 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder. There’s a built-in pop-up flash

There’s a 3.5mm microphone jack input, but still no headphone jack

It uses Canon LP-E12 batteries

External dimensions and weight are identical: 4.6 x 3.5 x 2.3″ / 116,3 × 88,1 × 58,7mm for a weight of 13.7oz/387g with battery and SD card

So, why would you want to upgrade to the Canon EOS M50 Mark II over the first generation?

Canon EOS M50 Mark II – Improvements

For filmmakers, the Canon EOS M50 Mark II features the same Dual Pixel autofocus system, but with improvements: Eye tracking is now available in both photo and video modes. Also, if you like to shoot content for social media, the camera now has a vertical video mode. Finally, you’ll get access to a clean (micro) HDMI out video signal for external recording.

The camera does have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity to share your content quickly, but this new version allows you to stream to YouTube Live over your smartphone’s internet connection. Also, you can use it as a webcam via the Canon EOS Webcam Utility that is now available on both Mac and Windows.
