FiLMiC Pro Now Supports Dolby Vision HDR with 10bit on iPhone 12

Apple has just recently released their new iPhone 12 series. Among several other new camera features and functions, Apple thereby brought 10-bit Dolby Vision HDR to their phone series. With the latest version v6.12.7, FiLMiC Pro now fully integrated 10-bit Dolby Vision HDR into their software.

This really ups the game with respect to pro video on a mobile device. Not so very long ago, a mobile phone’s camera was only capable of producing mushy, pixelated images with subpar color science. That has changed. And fast.

FiLMiC Pro Dolby Vision Unleashed

If you already have your new iPhone 12 ready for capturing some stunning winter shots, then you’ve probably waited for the integration of Dolby Vision by FiLMiC Pro. The option to enable Apple’s new Dolby Vision function in the app is accessible from the Settings -> Resolution menu. You may switch on the Dolby Vision function when scrolling to the end of this menu.

When activating Dolby Vision for your upcoming recordings, there are some aspects to consider:

• Recording Dolby Vision HDR might sound tempting, but you should, of course, remember that a compatible screen is necessary to watch the content properly.
• Switching the function on will automatically limit recording to 60fps in 1080p and 30fps in 4K.
• Recording in Dolby Vision HDR certainly takes much more computing power and will drain your battery faster than recording SDR. Thus it might be advisable to use SDR for more extended recordings.
• The “Cinematographer Kit” that users can purchase from inside the FiLMiC Pro app will not work together with Dolby Vision. 

For those who already regularly use FiLMiC Pro with its multiple essential, advanced, and professional features, activating Dolby Vision was probably on your mind since the Apple iPhone 12 keynote on October 13th, 2020.

Initial Thoughts

Including premium audio options, bitrate and aspect ratio controls, zebras, histogram, false color, frame rate settings, flat/log, and clean HDMI output – among many other things – FiLMiC Pro to me already was a potent tool even before this new update. Good to see that it has now become even more capable, adapting to the new iPhone 12 series features. If I could request a single wish to the programmers, it would be to ask them to integrate multi-camera support with up to four cameras in the DoubleTake app on the iPhone, as soon as this becomes viable with a more powerful iPhone.
