Live Streaming has been gaining traction over the last few years just in time to be widely available during the COVID-19 pandemic. Going forward, not having to be on location but still collaborating in real-time will be a great change for filmmakers mentally and also economically.
During the pandemic, Nino and I, just like many of you, had to host a few live streams. At one point Caleb Pike from DSLR Video Shooter released a video tutorial about his latest project, a Custom Blackmagic Atem Mini Case. We decided that it was a great idea to have a portable live streaming setup around our Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Pro ISO (a closer look) so we followed Caleb’s instructions and built one case ourselves.
What’s great about this case is that setup time is so quick – you just have to open the case, connect power and HDMI cables, and you are set. You could potentially even work like this without the need for a Laptop (but we always use one with the ATEM Software running).
The best feature of this solution is that we can be mobile with this setup. We attached a cheese plate to the bottom of our live streaming case which allows us to quickly mount the case on a light stand. And because the whole case is powered by ONE single power connector, we can easily attach a V-Mount battery to the stand and run a P-Tap power cable from the battery to the case (as long as your monitor can be powered with 14V battery power). This allows us to do multi-cam live streaming productions outdoors, as long as we have an internet signal.

In retrospect I would choose a thicker case in order to also fit the power adapter inside the case. Optionally an SSD (if you chose to record to disk) and the ATEM streaming bridge would also be nice to have in the same case as the ATEM.

The Blackmagic Video Assist is what we had on hand when building the case but you can use any monitor you like as long as it physically fits in the case.
What's great about the Video Assist is that it has both HDMI and SDI in- and outputs which can also cross convert. This means I can connect one SDI monitor and one HDMI monitor and still have the image on the Video Assist.
For plugging in just the stock Blackmagic ATEM power connector into the case and powering the switcher and monitor from the same source.
The ATEM doesn't have a power switch so it is powered on as soon as you plug in the power. These power switches let you individually power on/off the monitor and the ATEM switcher.

The DC cable for the ATEM doesn't stick out of the back of the case this way. This protects the power cable and you can easily set down the Pelicase.
You can 3D print threads but they will wear very quickly. That's why you will use brass thread inserts in order to connect all the 3D printed pieces together.
These will hold the 3D printed parts together and screw into the brass inserts.

If you have to send a live image to an audience or a client via Zoom, Skype or any other video conferencing software, then you have to connect the ATEM to your Laptop via USB-C.
This is necessary in order make the ATEM available as a webcam. Since the ATEM only has one USB-C connector, this removes the possibility to record to disk. You can either record the stream with software like OBS, or you can free up processing power and attach a recorder like the Atomos Ninja V to the ATEM streaming box via HDMI or SDI and record. The ATEM streaming box connects to the ATEM Mini via Ethernet.
