Sigma 24mm on the horizon?

Canon rumours have just posted an article stating the possibility of a Sigma releasing a 24mm 1.4 in the near future.

From canon rumors:

“We’re told that Sigma almost has a 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens ready.  An announcement could come this year or early next year. The build quality and performance will rival that of the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM we’re told. The lens will be a little more expensive, but Sigma hopes to keep it under $1000 USD.”

If true, this is great news. Sigma’s new releases hold great credibility. A cost effective, fast 24mm prime with AF will be warmly welcomed.

Sigma’s popularity has grown massively, almost overnight with their latest Global Vision Line. The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 and Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 have sparked huge excitement within the industry, both lenses producing stellar performances in their respect line-ups.

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 has come in just at the right time, with the right package, at the right price. The Canon 35mm f/1.4 is out dated. It’s 15 years old; it lacks weather sealing and begs for rounded aperture blades. Whilst Canon are undoubtedly working on a mark ii to bring it up to speed with the rest of their primes, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 will always have the edge on price. And with an abundance of recent coverage since it’s release, it’s clear that little margin is left with the image quality of the Sigma and top performers. Designed for the APS-C format, it offers superb flexibility combining a fast aperture and wide to mid zoom range (28-56mm equivalent to full frame). The reports of it’s slightly-longer-than-average focus barrel make it a great contender for video also.

With releases like this, and rumors of further expansion within their new line up, Sigma are becoming an ever more credible choice when building your lens collection. We’re used to trade-offs when choosing non-proprietary branded lenses; cheaper prices but no AF, poor build quality, inferior image quality. Sigma’s closing this gap, whilst retaining a much more competitive price. Will we see a price drop from Canon/Nikon? Unlikely, but Sigma have got to be turning heads by now.
