Tamron has released a new standard zoom lens for FUJIFILM X-Mount cameras: the Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD. This lens features built-in VC image stabilization and a Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive AF motor with minimal focus breathing, perfect for filmmakers. Let’s take a closer look at it!
Third-party lens manufacturer Tamron started releasing FUJIFILM X-Mount lenses one year ago, and the least we can say is that the company is moving fast! With the recent launch of the FUJIFILM X-H2S – don’t forget that you can still win a FUJIFILM X-H2S and $1.000 in cash by entering our contest! – it’s always nice to see new lens options for filmmakers and content creators!
The Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD, a full-frame equivalent to a 25.5-105mm zoom lens, is based on the same model released in January 2021 for Sony E-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras. This fast, lightweight, and compact zoom lens is now coming for FUJIFILM X-Mount cameras.
This 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a Super35 standard zoom lens with a constant F/2.8 aperture through the entire zoom range. The lens is lightweight at only 530g/1.2lbs for a length of 11.9cm. However, when you zoom in, the lens extends slightly to 14.6cm.
This lens covers APS-C sensors, which means it is compatible with every FUJIFILM X-Mount camera. In addition, the lens has a built-in VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization motor. Also, there is an RXD stepping motor for quick, fast, and near-silent autofocus performance.
If you’re shooting in harsh conditions, don’t worry, as the design is moisture-resistant.
The lens design of the Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 consists of 16 elements in 12 groups. Furthermore, two molded glass aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element help correct distortion and spherical aberrations. Also, two LD (Low Dispersion) elements significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range.
In terms of coatings, a Broad-Band Anti-Reflection coating is applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting artifacts. Finally, the front glass element has a fluorine coating to protect it from dust, dirt, and smearing.
This new 17-70mm has a front filter thread of 67mm to attach filters, and the aperture diaphragm consists of 9 rounded aperture blades for smooth bokeh results. Lastly, the minimum focusing distance is 19cm/7.5″.
The Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (model B070) should start shipping on July 8, 2022, for $799/€807.
