That’s a lot of capital letters in a headline, I know, and it will remain that way: RED Digital Cinema has announced a new control app for its KOMODO 6K and V-RAPTOR camera series, dubbed RED CONTROL PRO. The app will be available starting October 13 for a cool $499.99. It is capable of fully controlling the above camera types and even multi-camera arrays.
As the headline suggests, this new RED CONTROL PRO (App Store link) is only capable of controlling KOMODO 6K and V-RAPTOR cameras, so it does not support DSMC2 or previous generation RED cameras.
And since this is aimed at the high-end professional market, this newly coded app is quite pricey at $499.99, which is rather unusual for an App Store app (iPadOS 14 or higher). However, it is also available for macOS operating systems running Big Sur (11) or above and on Apple Silicon and Intel chips. So, no support for Microsoft Windows or Linux here.
This seems to be a more advanced version of the already available iPhone app called RED CONTROL (App Store link) which is free to download. Furthermore, there is a third-party app called foolcontrol by developer Mikael Lubtchansky which sells for $169.99 and works with RED’s DSMC cameras.
The freshly announced RED CONTROL PRO app offers advanced features such as multi-camera control, quick settings overview, FTP file access, advanced LUT, CDL and PRESET management, and independent image alignment settings. The app has also been completely redesigned for larger screens (as opposed to the older RED CONTROL iPhone app) and for monitoring live-streaming from multiple cameras simultaneously.
In addition, RED CONTROL PRO can be installed as a native MacOS app that includes a few more options such as automatic clip download plus detachable and resizable windows.
Personally, I think the price is pretty steep for an app that requires a rather expensive camera to even get started with, but if it works flawlessly and reliably day in and day out, it might be worth it for certain projects.
