VILTROX recently released not one but two compact RGBW LED lights: the Retro 08X and Retro 12X. As their name suggests, the Retro 08X is 8W, and the Retro 12X is 12W; they both have a built-in battery with a maximum runtime at full power of 3.5 hours for the 8X and two hours for the 12X. So, let’s take a closer at these small accent lights!
VILTROX entered the filmmaking gear industry in 2009, primarily focusing on producing lens mount adapters and affordable third-party lenses. Later, the company began expanding its range of products with the addition of V-Mount batteries, on-camera monitors, cine primes, and, more recently, their EPIC 1.33x anamorphic lenses we reviewed.
We recently saw a couple of interesting retro-looking LED lights hitting the market with Hobolite, and it looks like VILTROX is also joining the party with the recent launch of the Retro 08X and Retro 12X RGBW LED lights.
The VILTROX Retro 08X is an 8W LED light that measures 11.5 x 6.8 x 2.1cm/4.52 x 2.67 x 0.82in and weighs 197g/0.43 lbs. The Retro 12X is slightly more powerful at 12W and bigger at 14 x 8 x 1.8cm/5.51 x 3.14 x 0.7in and weighs 247g/0.54 lbs.
Both lights feature an aluminum housing with 1/4″-20 mounting points on the left side and at the bottom. Also, both Retro fixtures have a built-in battery with a maximum runtime of 3.5 hours for the 08X and two hours for the 12X at full power. You can charge the lights using the USB Type-C port at the bottom.
Since the VILTROX Retro are RGBW LED lights, you can adjust the CCT range from 2800K to 6800K, but you also have access to multiple color modes, including HSL/RGBWY/COL.
According to VILTROX, both lights have high CRI and TLCI ratings, with a CRI over 95 and a TLCI over 97. Since these are small accent lights, you’re looking at a maximum light output of 600lx at 0.5m/1.64ft for the Retro 08X and 1350lx at the same distance for the Retro 12X.
You can adjust your lighting settings via the buttons on the side of the fixture and the built-in screen at the back of it. As with most LED lights these days, you can control the VILTROX Retro wirelessly via the free Weeylite Pro App.
Furthermore, the VILTROX Retro LED lights have 26 built-in lighting FX, including the famous flash, blink, SOS, candlelight, flame, RGB loop, Police, etc…
The VILTROX Retro 12X comes with a removable diffuser that attaches to the front of the light to soften up the output a bit.
The VILTROX Retro 08X retails for $69.80, and the Retro 12X is $89. Both fixtures are available now.
