Tamron has just announced a new version of their 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 zoom lens for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. This lens was originally designed for Sony E-mount cameras; it covers full-frame image sensors, it has a constant F/2.8 maximum aperture, and it features a fast VXD linear focus motor. So, let’s take a closer look at it!
The Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD’s first version was launched in 2018 and was initially only available for Sony E-mount cameras. In 2021, Tamron released a G2 version of that lens with a revamped lens and optical design.
In September 2022, Tamron started developing lenses for Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras. After the 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD, Tamron recently announced that the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 zoom lens (codename: A063) will soon be available for Nikon Z cameras.
The Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is a compact zoom lens with a length of 11.9cm/4.7in for a weight of 550g/19.4oz. This lens has a constant maximum aperture of F/2.8 through the entire zoom range and covers full-frame image sensors.
As you can tell, the lens has a zoom ring at the front and a focus ring at the back but no user-assigned control ring. According to Tamron, this 28-75mm F/2.8 features moisture-resistant construction, and the “improved abrasion resistance makes the lens barrel harder to scratch and resists fingerprints.”
Furthermore, the 28-75mm F/2.8 G2 is compatible with the Tamron Lens Utility software and Lens Utility Mobile App, which allows you to update your lens firmware and customize some functionalities.
The lens design of this 28-75mm F/2.8 G2 consists of 17 elements in 15 groups, including two Low Dispersion and Glass Molded Aspherical lens elements to control chromatic aberrations. The front element has a fluorine coating to facilitate cleaning and add an extra layer of protection.
The aperture diaphragm features nine circular blades, the minimum focusing distance is 18cm/7.1in, and the front filter thread is 67mm.
The Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras is available to preorder now for $999 and should start shipping on April 18th.
