Atomos Shogun Inferno – Flagship 4K Recorder For Quad-SDI, RAW & 240fps Slow Motion

In a flow of new releases, Atomos announced their latest recorder: The Shogun Inferno capable of 4K 60p, HD at 240fps, HDR and Quad SDI. It is their highest-end product combining all the latest Atomos technology.

The Atomos Shogun Inferno

The latest from Atomos at NAB is their Shogun Inferno, their new 4K model is now capable of slow motion 4K 60p recording in ProRes, as well as HD 240fps super slow motion. All is recorded in professional 10bit 4:2:2 both in ProRes and DNxHR, catering for the growing need of wider colour depth for VFX and post production. It’s the first time slow motion 4K and super slow motion in HD is available in an Atomos recorder! So far these features were exclusive to the Convergent Design Odyssey Recorders.

The ability to output RAW (from selected cameras such as the Sony FS5/FS7/FS700, Canon C300 mkII/C500/Panasonic Varicam) and record in RAW has also been included in the Inferno via quad SDI in a variety of formats; CDNG, Apple ProRes or DNxHR. This will be available via a firmware update.

The frame rates for RAW recording in 4K DCI and UHD to the CDNG codec are; 24/25/30p. In 2K or 1080 HD; 24/25/30/50/60/100/120p.

In RAW to ProRes, 4K recording formats are expanded up to 60p. In 2K/1080 HD recording formats are expanded up to 200/240p.

In video to ProRes/DNxHR, the 4K recording formats are; 24/25/30/50/60p. In 2K/1080 HD, the recording formats are; 24/25/30/50/60/100/120/200/240p. Standard recording formats in 1080i are; 50i/60i, and in 720p; 50/60p.

To accommodate the higher 4K frame rates, Atomos have also announced a new range of HDMI 2.0 high speed, coiled cables, which will be available in a number of lengths and connectors.

As seen in the new Atomos Shogun Flame and Atomos Ninja Flame, HDR is now a killer feature when shooting in flat or log profiles (Check out our recent news articles on those HERE). Atomos have introduced the AtomHDR image processing to capture with the high brightness range of your camera’s Log profile while maintaining vibrant true-to-life colors. The 10-bit monitor expands the colour range to over 1 billion colours, giving a near true reproduction, and the 1500nit brightness allows for easy monitoring of wide dynamic range scenes or in bright sunlight conditions.

The recorder also features continuous power with hot swappable batteries like seen in the other Atomos recorders which will come as a sigh of relief for new adopters of the Inferno. The recorder uses standard NPF batteries where if one battery runs low on charge, it will hot swap to the second battery attached. If you’re recording in 4K, expect 1.5 hours of battery life.

The Shogun Inferno is being touted as battle-ready, with a high-quality ABS Polycarbonate body designed to be the ultimate in durability and portability. Included is a built-in armor that maximizes protection and enhances airflow. Frequent fliers will also be happy to hear about the HPRC flight case, which is included in the RRP.

Adding to the tonne of features, the Inferno can also be used as a grading monitor with the PQ (ST-2084) input, and output to standard HDR to compatible displays, further expanding the functionality of the device.

• AtomHDR; AtomHDR lets you shoot with the high brightness range of your camera’s Log profile and preview the final, vibrant post production HDR result.
• 4K 60p; Record and play out pristine ProRes/ DNxHR in 4K resolution and 24/25/30/50/60p frame rates.
• HD 240p; Apart from 4K recording, high frame rate HD from 50p to 240p can be recorded from cameras that output these high frame rates.
• Quad SDI; The Quad SDI inputs let you connect from cameras with 1.5/3/6/12G SDI outputs without the need for converters.
• Raw recording; Capture the RAW output from Sony FS7/ FS700 and Canon C300MKII/C500 over SDI, recording to either ProRes, DNxHR or CDNG.
• 10-bit monitor; 10-bit monitor processing increases the number of colors from 16.7 million for standard 8-bit panels to 1.07 billion, minimizing color banding on screen.
• 7” 1500nit brightness; For Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) shooting ramp thebrightness slider up to 1500 nit for hood-free outdoor monitoring.
• Apple ProRes & AVID DNxHR recording; Record to visually lossless Apple ProRes or AVID DNxHD in Rec709 or Log formats as an edit friendly, visually lossless industry benchmark independent of the camera brand used.
• PQ in/out; Take PQ out into larger HDR compatible screens or feed HDR from your NLE into the PQ input for HDR grading using the Inferno.
• Custom looks; Apply a custom look to footage by uploading andapplying “.cube” 3D LUT’s. View in full/half mode on screen, output it to a monitor or record into the footage.
• Continuous power; Our patent pending Continuous power system automatically swaps to the second battery when power is low for uninterrupted recording in the field.
• Playlist generation; Create playlists easily, either entire clips or tagged parts of clips, for playback on the unit or out to a larger screen.

The Atomos Shogun Inferno will be available from $1999 from many major retailers.
