The Samyang AF 24mm F/2.8 FE is the second auto focus lens offered for Sony E-mount cameras, in a tiny package.
‘Tiny But Wide’ 24mm E-mount lens with AF from Samyang
“Tiny but wide” is the message from Samyang, as they introduce their latest full frame E-mount lens with auto focus. The AF 24mm F/2.8 FE is only 3.8cm (1.5 inches) long and weighs a light 93.5g (3.3oz), which must make it one of the smallest lenses around. The benefit of this is the very small camera setup which suits the Sony E-mount cameras perfectly – especially for traveling with kit, filming on the go, or when using a handheld gimbal.
The auto focusing systems in Sony cameras are getting better and better by the model, which makes pairing one with an auto focus lens an ideal combination. The Samyang AF 24mm F/2.8 FE lens works in conjunction with Sony’s AF system for accurate and fast focusing, ideal in both filming and photography situations. Paired with an aperture of F/2.8, this lens can be used to capture both vast landscapes in bright light, or interior architecture in low light, for example.
The lens does have a manual focus override for when you wish to be more creative or, for when you wish to have more control over the subject being in focus.
To reduce abberations and flare, there are three aspherical and two high refractive elements in the lens, with an additional Ultra Multi-Coating to reduce these unwanted effects further.
The Samyang AF 24mm F/2.8 FE is functional and affordable
What certainly appeals is the price tag, which opens the floodgates for many, who are starting their journey into filmmaking or video with a nifty little prime lens. Could this be the new ‘nifty fifty’ lens; a reliable and reasonable optical quality lens? It certainly ticks the boxes following suit of Samyang’s previous full frame E-mount 35mm F/2.8 lens in terms of design, AF functionality and constant aperture.
This is the second autofocus lens on offer from Samyang for Sony E-mount cameras, adding to the AF 35mm F/2.8 FE lens currently available. As Samyang are interested in creating more E-mount lenses, we might see the addition of a 50mm and others in the future.
Samyang AF 24mm F/2.8 FE Specifications:
For travel, street and gimbal work the “tiny but wide” 24mm F/2.8 lens would certainly be one of the most discrete lenses to be paired with a full frame or APS-C Sony E-mount camera. However, are there any optical quality or auto focus speed limitations because of size? Time will tell.
The Samyang AF 24mm F/2.8 FE will be available in July 2018, at a very reasonable price tag, making it a very tasty option for a starter kit, or your first wide angle prime lens that would have a multitude of uses.
Does the Samyang AF 24mm F/2.8 FE interest you, with its tiny size and wide aperture? Perhaps you’re looking for a wide angle auto focus lens? Let us know in the comments.
