Pro App Developers are ramping up writing native versions of their Apps for Apple’s new ARM-based M1 Macs. This first beta release of Adobe Premiere Pro focuses on core editing functionality.
Adobe has released the first beta release of its popular NLE Premiere Pro. After Lightroom and Photoshop, Premiere Pro appears to be next of the Creative Cloud apps to be rewritten for Apple’s M1 Macs, built around the new ARM architecture. MacRumors notes that Adobe Premiere Rush and Adobe Audition have also been updated with M1 betas.
Being the first beta release of the popular video editing software that can be run natively on M1 Macs, Adobe has a long list of known bugs and missing features in its official announcement post.
They publicly state that the development team is concentrating on “core editing functions and workflows like color, graphics, and audio, as well as features like Productions, and multicam” in this first beta. The priority lies on support for the most widely used codecs, like H.264, HEVC, and ProRes.
Adobe mentions that they will complete rewriting their apps in phases and some parts have not been ported, yet. You can still install the stable Intel-version of Premiere Pro and run it using Rosetta 2 emulation without problems, just like you would on an Intel Mac.
As with any beta software, we do not recommend using this software in a real production environment, as you may run into problems or lose all your work. So install this only at your own risk.
[UPDATE]There is now also a new article on the Adobe Blog highlighting the benefits of the native Premiere Pro beta. Even though the Software is in beta, it appears to show some impressive export time speed improvements on the new hardware:
The Sensei-powered Scene Edit Detection feature shows even more impressive results. These improvements appear to already show up in the Intel-Version of Premiere Pro that can be run on M1 Macs using Rosetta 2 emulation. These are the results of the dedicated machine learning support in the Apple M1 chip, which even the Intel-native software can already take advantage of.
Release Versions of Premiere Pro, Audition, and Premiere Rush with full native support for Apple M1 systems on macOS will be available in the first half of 2021.
