AtomOS 10.74 for NINJA V & V+ Now Available – Custom Frame Guides, Frame Grab, and More

Atomos has just released a firmware update for its NINJA V and V+ 5-inch monitors/recorders: AtomOS 10.74. This latest firmware update includes three new features: custom frame guides, frame grab, and onion skin overlay. Let’s take a closer look at it!

The Atomos Ninja V was first introduced during NAB 2018, and this original 5-inch monitor-recorder is slowly being replaced by the updated NINJA V+, launched a year ago.

We recently learned more about Atomos’ new CEO, Estelle McGechie, which confirmed the company’s dedication to improving their products regularly. Indeed, close to five years after the launch of the original NINJA, it’s incredible that the company continues to update it with new free firmware updates.

Indeed, Atomos has just released a new firmware update for the NINJA V and V+, AtomOS 10.74, which brings a couple of new features.

AtomOS 10.74: what’s new

The AtomOS 10.74 update for the NINJA V and NINJA V+ monitors-recorders is a “creative update.” In short, this means that it does not change/improve the recording side of the devices, but only the monitoring part.

First of all, the latest update brings new custom frame guides that allow you to set specific aspect ratios. This feature is helpful, especially if you’re shooting content for social media with 1:1, 9:16, and such “non-conventional” aspect ratios. Most of the monitors in the market already have that feature, so it’s nice to see Atomos finally implement it.

The next addition in AtomOS 10.74 is the frame grab feature. As its name suggests, it allows you to generate and save stills directly on the NINJA V/V+ in PNG format with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Also, you can capture frames “out of the image sensor” or with a specific LUT applied to your image.

Last but not least, you’ll now have access to the “onion skin overlay” mode on the NINJA V/V+. This feature allows you to grab a frame that will be overlayed over the live image. This monitoring tool is handy if you’re doing stop motion work, and you need to see what the previous frame looked like.
