A sleeker and more compact 3-axis gimbal has emerged from Korea. Introducing the Camtool Alpha Beam with its lightweight, cable-less design.

The Camtool Alpha Beam is a cable-less 3-axis gimbal for use with cameras up to 2.6Kg. It features the worlds first magnet encoder with 14-bit encoding for precise stabilization and control. The lack of flying cables means a setup that’s compact and easy to adjust, and the addition of tool-less balancing setting promises an incredibly quick setup time of 20-30 seconds (according to the specs).

The Camtool Alpha Beam offers 5 operation modes, but lacks a thumb control or joystick for independent panning, tilting and yaw adjustment.

• Mode 1 – Locks tilt for panning with motion only.
• Mode 2 – Default mode, follows motion with tilt and pan unlocked.
• Mode 3 – Camera locked in a fixed position.
• Mode 4 – ‘Going After Mode’ follows all gimbal movement.
• Mode 5 – Reset to the ‘home’ position.

The Alpha Beam runs on 2 Lithium 18650 3.7V batteries, a kind that is widely available. It also requires no stand or support, as the handle frame supports it on flat surfaces. In the demo videos, the grip handles can be mounted both up and down, too.

The Camtool Alpha Beam is certainly more compact than, for example, the CAME TV Mini, resembling something more like the Letus Helix Jr, although that design improvement will cost you.  It’s on sale from a number of online shops including eBay, which has the product listed for $1692.00 (roughly €1494 EUR), but can be purchased from the Korean re-seller here.

There are many new gimbals emerging all the time, so it will be interesting to watch more videos using the gimbal to see it’s performance.
