Canon EOS R50 Unveiled – “Gateway” APS-C Camera for Content Creators

Canon has just unveiled a new compact APS-C mirrorless camera, the EOS R50, along with a compact 55-210mm RF mount APS-C telephoto zoom lens. Aimed at content creators, the EOS R50 features a 24.2MP APS-C sensor, can shoot videos at up to UHD 4K30p, comes with new automatic modes and has Dual Pixel AF II. The camera body retails for €829.

In May 2022, Canon launched its first-ever APS-C mirrorless cameras, namely the EOS R7 and EOS R10, along with two ASP-C kit zoom lenses, the RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM and RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM. But while the EOS R7 and R10 can still be considered “gateway” cameras to the EOS R mirrorless ecosystem, the Japanese company has something even more intuitive up their sleeve.

Indeed, along with the new EOS R8 and RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens, today Canon unveiled the EOS R50, which is tailor-made specifically for content creators looking to upgrade their kit from a smartphone to a mirrorless camera. Let’s take a closer look!

Canon EOS R50: “entry-level” APS-C camera for content creators

Like the EOS R10, the new Canon EOS R50 features a 24.2MP CMOS APS-C sensor. In stills mode, the camera can shoot at speeds of up to 12fps using the electronic shutter and 15fps using the silent shutter. On the video side, the 6K sensor is used to create oversampled UHD 4K videos, which can be recorded at up to 30fps (4K60p is available on the EOS R10 and R7, respectively with and without crop).

Moreover, the camera features Canon’s latest and greatest Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus system, which can automatically detect and track people, animals, and vehicles. In my experience, this technology works like a charm and can be a very helpful assistance tool for vloggers or content creators that are just starting out.

By the way, when shooting in selfie-style mode, the angle of the 3-inch touchscreen display can be adjusted to better monitor the image and control camera settings. According to Canon, the camera is designed with first-timers in mind, which is why they have decided to implement new advanced automatic modes.

These include the Creative Assist and Creative Bracketing functions: the first one automatically adjusts settings depending on the shooting environment, while the latter provides different look options for each captured image.

Audio and connectivity

While the camera is claimed to record crisp audio out of the box, the top of the body features a multi-function hot-shoe connection which can be used to attach an external digital microphone or audio interface to the camera, such as Canon’s DM-E1D or the TASCAM XLR unit.

The EOS R50 also packs 2.4GHz Wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity to quickly share files with smart devices using the Camera Connect app (iOS/Android) or remotely control the camera with the BR-E1 remote. Lastly, when connecting the EOS R50 to a computer via a USB-C cable, the camera is automatically detected as an external webcam for live streaming.

Canon RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM: compact APS-C telephoto zoom

Along with the EOS R50, Canon also added a new compact APS-C telephoto zoom lens to their lineup, the RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM. This versatile RF mount glass offers a 3.8x zoom, can provide up to 4.5 stops of image stabilization (7 stops when used in combination with IBIS) and Canon claims that its STM focusing system is suitable for video shooting.

Price and availability

The new Canon EOS R50 is now available to pre-order from B&H for $679 and should start shipping towards the end of March. The camera comes in two variants, black or white. Moreover, the camera can be bought in pair with the existing RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM for $799 or both the 18-45mm and the brand new RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM for $1,029. Lastly, the new APS-C telephoto zoom retails for $349.
