Canon today introduced a new small 4K 1 inch sensor 4K camera with a fixed lens, the XC10.
The XC10 is a brand-new product category for Canon – a very compact and lightweight UHD-capable video (and stills) camera with a built-in fixed zoom range of 25-135mm, with a 1-inch sensor. The lens has a f2.8 to 5.6 aperture with a 10x optical zoom and focal length range of 8.9 to 89mm (35mm equivalent: 27.3 to 273 mm). It records 4K up to 29.97fps, 1080p/i up to 59.94 fps, and 720p up to 119.98 fps. It also has a slow and fast motion feature supported at 1080 resolution. Besides shooting 4K video it also shoots 13.36 MP stills.
It also uses CFast 2.0 cards and the XF-AVC codec, which is quite impressive for a camera of this size. It features CLog and Wide DR as well as many other shared settings from the higher-end Canon Cinema cameras. It has a smart hot shoe for audio accessories, however Canon is leaving it to third parties to develop these audio accessories. The camera also features an HDMI output with a 4:2:2, 10-bit signal.
We can see this camera clearly getting a lot of interest as a b-camera to many higher-end Cinema camera productions, or as a stand-alone one-man-band news-gathering tool – which it is perfectly fit for with its wide zoom range and optical stabilization.
The XC10 will come in at $2,499.
