DaVinci Resolve 16 and Fusion 16 – Beta 3 Now Available

During NAB 2019, Blackmagic Design announced DaVinci Resolve 16 and Fusion 16. Blackmagic is known for listening to its customers and releasing several Betas before the final version to correct bugs and improve its software. They just released the third Beta of DaVinci Resolve 16 and Fusion 16. Let’s take a closer look.

DaVinci Resolve 16 – Beta 3

Blackmagic Design just released the third Beta version of DaVinci Resolve 16 and DaVinci Resolve 16 Studio. As usual, this update includes dozens of performance/stability improvements and fixes that users requested. This Beta 3 of DaVinci Resolve 16 improves H.264 and H.265 encoding on AMD hardware, improves font rendering, and now supports for copying retime and scaling attributes between clips in the edit timeline.

Here is the complete list of fixes and improvements:

• Support for dragging smart bins to smart bin folders
• Support for copying retime and scaling attributes between clips in the edit timeline
• Support for a timecode generator output in Fairlight page for driving external audio applications
• Improved behavior for Elastic Wave with the ability to stretch or compress ends of the clip
• Improved behavior when compositing compound clips containing gaps
• Improved support for video names and descriptions for Vimeo, YouTube and Frame.io exports from the deliver page and quick export dialog
• Improved support for keyboard shortcuts for clip and timeline actions in cut page
• Improved performance when marquee selecting multiple clips in the edit page
• Improved playback performance when selection follows playhead is enabled in the edit page
• Improved bitrate handling when using AMD hardware acceleration to encode H.264 and H.265 clips
• Improved naming behavior for duplicated bins, clips, and timelines in the media pool
• Addressed an issue where smart bins would not be listed in floating media pool windows
• Addressed an issue where smart bin folders would briefly display wrong content when first opened
• Addressed an issue where enabling use timeline bin in project settings presets would sometimes cause a crash
• Addressed an issue where changing video clip attributes for multiple clips would not preserve their audio channel mapping
• Addressed an issue where the reel name metadata would be incorrectly read for video and audio clips when importing third party XMLs
• Addressed an issue where importing some metadata files to the media pool would result in incorrect metadata being displayed for some clips
• Addressed an issue where through edits could not be joined in the cut page
• Addressed an issue where trimming clips in the Cut timeline would not correctly scroll
• Addressed an issue with luminance accuracy in EBU Color bar generators

Also, in the Edit page, a few changes were made:

• Addressed an issue where dynamic trimming media with synced multi-channel audio would cause a crash
• Addressed an issue where the decompose compound clip option would not be respected when appending a compound clip to the edit timeline
• Addressed an issue where cleaning up video tracks by flattening unused clips would incorrectly allow adjustment clips to overwrite clips underneath
• Addressed an issue with the display of audio waveforms for stacked or tabbed timelines in the edit page
• Addressed an issue where the keyboard shortcut to switch to timeline viewer would not work correctly in single viewer mode
• Addressed an issue where the ripple sequence setting would not be honored when changing clip speeds in the edit page
• Addressed an issue where applying ease in or out on a position keyframe from the inspector would sometimes cause a crash
• Addressed an issue where applying stroke to subtitles for some fonts would clip the rendered text in the edit page
• Addressed an issue where selecting a subtitle track would sometimes not enable the New Caption button in the Edit Inspector
• Addressed an issue where audio waveforms in the edit timeline would sometimes not be correctly refreshed till the Fairlight page is loaded
• Addressed an issue where performing insert edits on a track with position lock enabled would cause a crash in the edit page
• Addressed an issue where the clip color would not be refreshed correctly when moving a clip between tracks with different clip color presets in the cut page
• Addressed an issue where filtering by individual marker or flag colors in the edit index would work only when the language was set to English
• Addressed an issue where replacing a clip would not preserve the clip color
• Addressed an issue with poor rendering of titles at smaller font sizes

The Color page is already one of the most powerful in its class, but they made some small fixes:

• Addressed an issue where adding or editing some third-party OpenFX plugins in the color page would cause a crash
• Addressed an issue where timeline wipe actions on the color page would not show changes in GPU scopes
• Addressed an issue where histogram backgrounds would not be shown when viewing the timeline node graph
• Addressed an issue where changing color parameters on the viewer or resetting keyframes in the inspector would sometimes not refresh the keyframe timeline in the color page
• Addressed an issue where toggling cinema mode in the color page would not retain focus on the viewer

And finally, they added a couple of new codecs support and fixed some bugs:

• Addressed an issue where H.264 and H.265 clips from specific Fuji cameras would not be decoded with the correct colors
• Addressed an issue where some MJPEG clips not be decoded with the correct colors
• Addressed an issue where decoding some ARX clips would show incorrect colors
• Addressed an issue where some AVCHD clips could not be imported in DaVinci Resolve
• Addressed an issue where DNxHR 444 clips with pre-multiplied alpha rendered from DaVinci Resolve 15 would not be decoded correctly
• Addressed an issue with exporting large video clips to Vimeo and YouTube
• Addressed an issue where the quick export dialog would use incorrect render extents in some scenarios
• Addressed an issue where rendering H.264 clips with custom bit rates would show image artifacts

Fusion 16 – Beta 3

Fusion – the compositing/VFX part of DaVinci Resolve – is fully integrated since into DaVinci Resolve since version 15. Indeed, Blackmagic Design also addressed some of the Fusion’ small problems:

• Addressed an issue where undoing changes to certain Fusion node parameters made from numeric entry sliders would behave incorrectly
• Addressed an issue where icons and text for aux channels would not reflect the current state in the Fusion viewer
• Addressed an issue when previewing temporal Fusion tools on clips with a pixel aspect ratio different from the timeline
• Addressed an issue with OpenGL renderer handling of aux channels in the Fusion page
• Addressed an issue with interlaced processing of masks in the Fusion page
• Addressed an issue with incorrect DoD contents when blending masks in a Fusion comp
• Addressed an issue where canvas colors would sometimes appear with swapped red and blue channels
• Addressed an issue where previewing VectorMotionBlur would cause a crash
• Addressed an issue with CUDA GPU errors when using FastGaussianBlur in Fusion page
• Addressed an issue where viewers flicker when using paint with clone or time offset in the Fusion page
• Addressed an issue where double polyline rendering could cause a crash in Fusion page
• Addressed an issue where clip alpha would not be preserved when applying ResolveFX Aperture Diffraction in Fusion page

This new DaVinci Resolve 16 Beta 3 version is already available to download on the Blackmagic Design support page.
And for Studio users, this is a free upgrade from all previous versions.
