Musashi Takumi 2 Cine Zoom Announced – Full Frame 29-120mm T2.9 PL

Japanese company Musashi Optical System Co. has announced a new high-end cine zoom lens to complement its existing Takumi 1 40.6 – 332mm T4.8 FF zoom lens. The new Takumi 2 cine zoom ranges from 29-120mm, covers full-frame sensors and features a fast T2.9 aperture.

While the Takumi 1 knew how to impress with its massive 8.18x zoom ratio, the new Takumi 2 has another ace up its sleeve: A very fast T2.9 aperture (as opposed to the Takumi 1’s T4.8). Such a fast aperture is pretty impressive for a 4.14x zoom lens. Let’s take a quick look at this new offering by Musashi-Opt.

Takumi 2 29-120mm T2.9 FF PL cine zoom lens

This new lens comes with some nice details on its spec sheet, no doubt about it. Hopefully, the company can deliver what is promised here. A field test will have to prove the claimed specs, but here it goes:

Another (very important) claimed feature is the absence of focus breathing, so the field of view does not change when the focus is changed. This is a common problem with budget lenses as it is fairly difficult (= expensive) to achieve, especially with more complex zoom lenses.

That’s it for the details of the upcoming Takumi 2 cine zoom. I’m curious to see how it will be received by the market, as given the rather high-end specifications of the Takumi 2, it won’t be a particularly cheap lens to buy (The Takumi 1 sells for $38,000). On the other hand, there are quite a few renowned lens manufacturers in this segment, such as Angenieux, Zeiss, ARRI or Cooke, so we will see how this niche lens is received.

Pricing and availabilty

There is no word on the price yet. The Takumi 2 29-120mm T2.9 will ship around the end of May, beginning of June this year. Stay tuned for more details as they become available to us.

The Takumi 1 40.6 – 332mm T4.8 is available now for around $38,000, and there’s also a s35 version of the Takumi 1 23.9 – 195mm T2.9 ($25,000). Quite expensive, sure, but far cheaper than the offerings of the aforementioned best-in-class players.
