Panasonic is the first of the big camera manufacturers to pull out of the IBC Show in September. Will more exhibitors follow suit?
The Panasonic stand at IBC 2019.
Despite countries and governments putting various measures in place to restrict the spread of COVID-19 and get reality back on track, this has not been enough for Panasonic to exhibit at Europe’s largest broadcasting trade show, IBC. The trade show is still scheduled to take place at the RAI, Amsterdam, in September (you can read the latest statement from IBC here).
Panasonic will instead be focusing on launching a ‘Technology Experience Zone‘ for partners and customers to engage in live streams, podcasts, training, and webinars.
André Meterian, Director of the Professional Video Systems Business Unit for EMEA, has said: “It has been a very difficult decision. As much as we look forward each year to welcoming visitors at this important industry event, we must prioritise the well-being of our staff, partners, and attendees.”
Last month, NAB 2020 was canceled due to coronavirus. However, the industry and cinema5D.com focused on delivering news and announcements through articles, videos, and live streaming. This may show that there is less of a need for a physical trade show when the relevant information can be published to audiences in a very similar way to a real trade show.
With Panasonic out of the list for IBC 2020, only time will reveal whether the other big players such as Canon, Sony, Vitec, Atomos, and many more will also choose to withdraw from the show. Additionally, The Netherlands government made an announcement regarding large events that may resume in September, but there is, of course, no guarantee that this will be the case.
At cinema5D we are committed to covering the news and announcements from trade shows both virtually, and when it is physically safe to do so.
What are your thoughts on Panasonic withdrawing from IBC 2020? Do you think the trade show should go ahead? Let us know in the comments.
