RØDE AI-Micro is a new ultra-compact dual-channel interface for recording high-quality audio to a mobile device or computer. Featuring two auto-sensing inputs for connecting virtually any microphone with a 3.5mm output, a high-power headphone output for zero-latency audio monitoring and playback, and a universal USB output for use with both mobile devices and computers with iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS systems. Furthermore, it can be used with the entire suite of RØDE apps for better recording and controlling options.
Lately, it almost looked like the Australian audio company RØDE only focuses on its Wireless GO II audio system. After its announcement in February 2021, the company introduced a significant update in April 2021 which unlocked standalone onboard audio recording and more. Recently, RØDE made the Wireless GO II compatible with its Central Mobile and Connect Apps. Today, however, the company announces a different product – a new compact dual-channel interface for recording high-quality audio to a mobile device or computer – called AI-Micro. Let’s take a look at its features and specs.
The AI-Micro features two microphone inputs with high-quality preamps and can record high-resolution 24-bit/48kHz audio. These are auto-sensing inputs that detect whether a TRS or TRRS microphone is connected and automatically adapt to accommodate without the need for adaptors. Input 1 can also be configured as a single stereo TRS input. This means that virtually any microphone with a 3.5mm output can be connected to the AI-Micro, including shotgun mics, lavaliers, wireless audio systems, and stereo microphones.
Additionally, the AI-Micro features a high-power headphone output for zero-latency audio monitoring and playback. Weighing less than 20 grams, the AI-Micro is very compact and lightweight. It is designed to connect seamlessly to smartphones, tablets, and computers via its universal USB output. It is plug-and-play compatible with Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android devices, and comes with USB-A, USB-C, and Lightning cables.
This device seems to be useful not only for audio recording but also for getting better audio during video conferences and calls which became a daily activity for many people since the COVID-19 related social distancing and home office.
The good news is that the AI-Micro can be used with the entire RØDE app suite – including RØDE Connect, RØDE Central, and RØDE Reporter – which offer expanded features and functionality, on-the-go configuration, and audio recording.
RØDE Connect is a free podcasting and streaming software for Mac and Windows which enables up to four microphones to be connected to a computer, with level controls, solo, and mute buttons, and high-quality audio processing. This includes a compressor, noise gate, as well as APHEX Aural Exciter and Big Bottom effects.
RØDE Central allows users to configure the AI-Micro on a computer or mobile device, including adjusting the input gain and headphone output level, switching between ‘Merged’, ‘Split’, and ‘Stereo’ channel mode, and engaging a high-pass filter. The RØDE Reporter mobile app also allows complete device configuration, as well as audio recording in the field.
The RØDE AI-Micro is available for order now for $79.
