Rokinon has announced two new lenses for the APS-C & MFT mirrorless formats. The 21mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.2 will be available in both silver and black with various mirrorless mounts such as Canon EF-M, Sony E mount and Micro Four Thirds.
There’s been a huge influx in popularity for mirrorless filmmaking recently, with cameras like the Sony A7sXX and Panasonic GH4 taking over as the top performers (over DSLRS) in the compact consumer sector.
Lens manufacturers have taken their time with adapting to the format however we are starting to see a slow increase in options, Rokinon has just announced two budget options for the standard and wide focal length.
The 50mm f/1.2 is Rokinons fastest available lens. It is designed for the APS-C format, compatible with full frame mirrorless cameras like the Sony A7S in cropped mode only!
This converts the lens to a 80mm, or 100mm if you’re purchasing the Micro Four Thirds version for the Panasonic GH4.
The Rokinon 50mm f/1.2 has a 9-rounded blade aperture diaphragm for a smooth out of focus aesthetics. It features 9 elements in 7 groups, an Ultra Multi-Coating for boosted contrast and a 62mm front filter thread.
One of the beauties of mirrorless cameras is the ability to keep the form factor small. The Rokinon doesn’t disappoint in this regard, coming in a little lighter but ever so slightly bigger than the Zeiss 50mm Loxia (the perfect sized lens for Sony A7XX cameras). Exact size and weight found in the spec below.
The second announcement is a wider 21mm f/1.4. This equates to a little under 34mm on APS-C and 42mm on Micro Four Thirds.
Just like the 50mm f/1.2 the Rokinon 21mm f/1.4 features an Ultra Multi-Coating and a 9-rounded blade aperture. The front filter thread is slightly smaller at 58mm and the lens is constructed of 8 elements in 7 groups.
Interestingly both lenses include Canon EF-M in their compatibility list; very few third party companies offer native support to what many consider an un-maintained division in professional/pro-sumer terms.
Sony E mount and Micro Four Thirds will no doubt be the lenses most popular mounts; Fujifilm X is also among the list.
Both the lenses will be available in black and silver finish and both will be available in Cine form also, meaning a de-clicked aperture, geared aperture and focus ring and T-stop rating (Pictured below under the Samyang banner).
