SHAPE recently launched its lineup of accessories for the Sony FX3 that consists of a minimalistic cage, a removable HDMI clamp, and a 15mm LW rod base. If you’re in quest of a compact and lightweight rigging solution for your FX3, let’s take a closer look at these new accessories!
Canadian manufacturer SHAPE is well-known for its innovative products that make filmmakers’ lives easier. For example, the company recently released a swing-away mattebox that we reviewed here.
The company already had cages and other accessories available for the Sony FX6 and the Sony FX9. The lineup is now complete with the launch of their SHAPE Sony FX3 rigging solutions.
Let’s start with the core element, which is the lightweight aluminum cage that wraps around the FX3’s bottom and right side only.
This cage features multiple 3/8″-16 with ARRI locating pins and 1/4″-20 mounting points on the right side. However, the cage does not obstruct the memory card door.
Also, the cage comes with a removable HDMI clamp protector.
You’ll also find a removable rosette to 15mm adapter, and a wooden side handle in the kit. The handle features a cold shoe mount and a 3/8″-16 with anti-twist pins. I’m not a massive fan of that design, as you need to use an included Allen wrench each time you want to adjust the position of the rod, even if the handle itself can rotate on the rod. But, you got it; it’ll take you a couple of minutes on set to put the handle on/off, which usually means you’re less likely to use it.
The SHAPE Sony FX3 cage includes a small adapter that mounts to the camera’s top handle and features a cold shoe and a 3/8″-16 mounting point.
At the bottom of the cage, you’ll find a removable Sony-style Delta wedge. This Delta wedge will be helpful if you go with the SHAPE Sony FX3 kit that includes the 15mm LW rod base. Indeed, thanks to this quick release system, you’ll be able to quickly engage your camera inside the baseplate.
The kit with the 15mm LW rode base also includes an adjustable Metabones bracket and a set of 10″ 15mm rods.
The SHAPE cage for the Sony FX3 is available now for $228/€249. The package with the 15mm LW rod base retails for $483/€528.
