SIGMA has just unveiled that their compact 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary standard zoom lens for APS-C sensors will soon make its way to FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras. The lens will be available in December 2022.
At the beginning of this year, SIGMA introduced their first three lenses designed for the FUJIFILM X-mount system: the 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm f/1.4 DC DN. Now, the company announced that these three primes will soon be joined by a compact APS-C standard zoom, the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary.
This isn’t entirely a new lens, since it’s already available in Sony E and Leica L-mount options. Nonetheless, it’s nice to see SIGMA showing some love to FUJIFILM enthusiasts. So let’s take a closer look!
Just like the Sony and Leica variants, the X-mount version of the SIGMA 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary is designed to cover the APS-C format. FUJIFILM has released no less than 3 APS-C cameras this year, namely the X-H2S (Review / Lab Test / Interview with FUJIFILM), the X-H2 (review), and, more recently, the X-T5.
This new 18-50mm standard zoom can be a great match for all of these cameras, packing a constant aperture of f/2.8 and a versatile focal length range in an extremely travel-friendly form factor.
The lens has great close focus capabilities, with a minimum focusing distance of 12.1cm/4.8” when set at 18mm, supports continuous AF, and can exchange data with compatible bodies to enable in-camera aberration correction.
One of the biggest selling points of this lens resides in its portability. Indeed, the glass measures 61.6X76.8mm/2.4×3” in size and is featherlight, coming at only 258g/10.1oz. Moreover, the front of the lens is equipped with a 55mm thread to accommodate screw-on filters.
The optical scheme consists of 13 elements divided into 10 groups, including 1 SLD as well as 3 aspherical elements. According to SIGMA, the lens delivers sharp images across the whole focal range with a smooth bokeh, achieved thanks to the 7-blade aperture design.
The official launch of the new SIGMA 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary is scheduled for December 2022. Its official retail price is set at $549. The lens comes with a lens hood as well as front and rear caps.
Finally, SIGMA offers a mount conversion service to adapt existing versions of the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary to fit FUJIFILM’s X-mount system.
