SmartSystem, an Italian company specializing in filmmaking technology, has now introduced the 7-inch SmartCAM Monitor SM7-PRO-3G, a “ruggedized monitor designed for stabilized use”, crafted specifically for situations demanding durability and stability. With a noteworthy 3200nits of brightness along with other interesting features, this could be a nice addition for any filmmaker who tends to put their gear through its paces. Let’s have a look!
Lightweight and compact at only 1.3kg/2.7lb, this monitor is ideal for mounting on a stabilizer, slider, or gimbal system, and, according to the company, is engineered to meet all the physical requirements of modern stabilizers. Additionally, the 17.78cm/7″ LCD panel is housed in a solid aluminum casing and has been specially designed to be water-resistant using “dedicated paths” through their Water Managed System. This system works because the casing shrinks and expands according to temperature, so when a sudden burst of rain hits it, “paths” form that allow the water to run off. Don’t confuse this with it being “waterproof”, you most certainly cannot submerge this device under water without destroying it.
The SmartSystem SM7-PRO-3G monitor has a maximum brightness of 3200 nits, and with Adaptive Backlight Management, a dedicated and integrated light sensor, brightness can be controlled in mixed environments. The panel’s native resolution is 1920×1200 with a contrast ratio of 1200:1. The monitor’s protected LCD glass screen has an AR coating.
The USB port enables the import of custom 3D LUTs and facilitates firmware upgrades. Additionally, a 3-pin push-pull connector lets the user see the TALLY on-screen with two dedicated and separate Red/Green channels.
XTBUS is the monitor’s new communication protocol that will let you connect both current and future products in a dedicated network where information and data can be shared.
The SmartCAM Monitor SM7-PRO-3G is available on the SmartSystem website for €2,999.94 and comes with a 1x 2pin-2pin push-pull connector, a resin case, and a neoprene softshell.
What monitor do you rely on when you’re in the field? Does the SmartCAM look like an interesting option to you? Let us know in the comments!

A camera was put in my hands at 16, and I’ve been taking photographs ever since. An American, I’ve lived and worked in Vienna for many years both as a photographer and a photography teacher. Currently I am the photographer for the award-winning Nesterval immersive theater group. I’m a teller of stories. Stories hold my interest. I’ll take on any project with a story to tell.
