Sound Devices recently released new firmware updates, version 9.00, for its MixPre-Series I and II audio recorders that now support two instances of the NoiseAssist plugin, a new +2ch plugin for the MixPre-3 that turns it into a 5-channel/7-track recorder with extra channels sourced from the Aux or USB input. So let’s take a closer look at this firmware update!
Sound Devices, the famous US audio recorder manufacturer acquired by Audiotonix Group in 2021, is well-known for its legendary audio mixers such as the 302 and 633. Back in 2017, the company introduced the MixPre-Series of compact and “affordable” audio recorders. In September 2019, the second generation was introduced with a major addition: 32-bit float audio recording.
What is nice is that four years later, Sound Devices continues to update its products with optional plugins and new features, introducing firmware update version 9.00 for the MixPre-Series.
The latest Sound Devices firmware update version 9.00 for the MixPre-Series is compatible with all audio recorders, from the MixPre-3 to the MixPre-10, and is compatible with Series I and Series II products. However, you won’t get access to the same features and updates as it is dependent on the model you have.
First of all, all MixPre-Series II models will now support two instances of the optional NoiseAssist plugin. This useful plugin instantly suppresses background noise, which can be handy on location.
Next, for MixPre-3 audio recorders, version I and II, you can now purchase the optional +2 channel plugin. Once installed, the plugin adds two audio channels to your device and transforms your MixPre-3 into a 5-channel/7-track recorder. The two extra channels will be sourced from the Aux or USB-C input.
Also, for the MixPre-3 II and MixPre-6 II, you’ll now be able to have both timecode and audio output on the Stereo Out 3.5mm connector. Below are all the other additions and fixes:
All firmware updates are available to download now on Sound Devices’ website here, free of charge. The +2 MixPre-3 plugin retails for $79, and the two-instance NoiseAssist plugin is an extra $600.
What do you think about these firmware updates for the MixPre-Series audio recorders? Did you already shoot with a Sound Devices audio recorder? Don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments below!
