D | Focus
The D | Focus is a very cheap follow focus. It comes with some accessories that let you either put it on rails, or use it with the camera alone. This one isn’t in the same ballpark as the other brands tested. It’s in a very different league. The sole purpose of reviewing this is to give you an impression of how it theoretically performs against the other contestants.
The base plate is a cool addition to the follow focus. It’s made by hangrip.comIt’s very simple and cheap. Unfortunately, the rubber part comes off real quick when you move the camera while it is attached to the plate, which happens often.
When you use the base plate with the follow focus, you put the whole thing on in a crooked way so it will fit the desired lens. You have to play with this until you get the right combination of angles. There seem to be numerous ways to set this up right for your lens. If it doesn’t work one way you’ll have to try another combination.
Setup takes about 10 to 15 minutes. You need some time to figure it out. This time could become shorter, as you get more familiar with the thing after several uses. You also need some time to tighten screws again, during this process.
