The Tripod Setup

Base plates, (also referred to as “rail support”) are at the core of every rig. It’s the connection from the camera itself to the rest of the rig. The big words on these babies are: stability, compatibility and speed. A good base plate can be attached quickly and provide room in front and behind the camera, some even underneath.

Once the camera is attached to the base plate, you usually add a follow focus to accurately and/or conveniently control focus during a shot and then a matte box to control the light, before it goes into your lens.

At this point, you’d be ready to shoot from a tripod. We’ve tested several of these core setups by six manufacturers. We’ll do this alphabetically again.

We are evaluating the products by a very strict standard, because we think that good quality of cinematic products is essential to a successful filmmaking work.
