Tilta has introduced a new adapter that allows you to mount PL lenses to cameras featuring a LPL mount. The adapter can be ordered directly from Tilta’s webshop for $449. So let’s have a closer look!
When it comes to ARRI’s LPL (Large Positive Lock) mount, ARRI offers their own adapter solutions along with a PL to LPL version. Third-party suppliers like Wooden Camera and Kipon also offer PL (Positive Lock Mount) to LPL adapters in a similar price range to the Tilta. In general, the LPL mount has a wider diameter (62mm/2.44in vs. 54mm/2.12in) and a shorter flange focal distance (44mm/1.73in vs. 52mm/2.04in).
This new adapter from Tilta has a standard PL to LPL design with accurate flange focal distance and is compatible with the following camera models:
It also has a quick locking mechanism and no tools are required for installation. The adapter is made of aluminum alloy and stainless steel.
The big difference between third-party suppliers for adapters and the original ARRI adapters is how stray light is suppressed. ARRI developed a sophisticated stray light suppression technology using an expensive coating in combination with special ridges and light masks placed inside the camera cavity.
This technique lets the camera capture the full contrast range and the character of a lens, while also providing deep, rich blacks. For cinematographers, this is a big deal, but it is also an expensive deal. Just keep in mind that this special stray light suppression coated ARRI adapter costs around $1,500 (about three times more than the Tilta adapter).
The new Tilta PL to LPL Mount Adapter is now available for pre-order directly at the Tilta’s online shop for $449. There is a 10% discount on orders placed before March 24th and free shipping on orders over $299 in the US and on orders over $399 to Europe, Asia, Canada and Mexico.
What do you think of this new lens mount adapter from Tilta? Would you use it with PL lenses on your ARRI camera? Please let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
