Tilta has just lifted the curtain on its latest piece of filmmaking gear: the Tilta Pocket Follow Focus can be considered a Mini Follow Focus 2.0, as it is marketed as its direct successor with a few improved features.
Tilta, under its Tiltaing sub-brand, has just introduced its new Pocket Follow Focus, a versatile yet tiny (and very affordable) follow focus for filmmakers on the go.
According to Tilta, this new system improves on the design of the Mini Follow Focus and is made of a new composite material that improves the mechanics of the system while remaining lightweight and compact.
Just like its predecessor, the new Pocket Follow Focus attaches to a single 15mm rod, and you can easily adjust the angle to suit your lens and rig. You can still use standard whips or cranks with this unit, and of course you can change the gear to match different lens gears.
The new Follow Focus comes with a standard 0.8 pitch gear and a flexible lens gear for attaching to a photo lens that may not have its own gear.
The new unit not only supports 360-degree rotation, but also features hard stops that allow you to set a limited focus range to quickly pull focus between two specific distances. This is helpful not only for very specific focus pulls, but also for working with photo lenses that usually don’t have fixed stops.
However, if you need full rotation but don’t want to lose your set stops, the new quick release system allows you to engage or disengage these stops without having to take them out. In addition, the included magnetic marker disks can be used to mark different focus distances and can be easily replaced when needed.
Lastly, the focus wheel features a fluid damping system that emulates the feel of the lens itself and assists in precise focusing.
The new Tilta Pocket Follow Focus sells for $69, but through September 5 it’s 10% off, making it $62.10. Right now it’s available for pre-order, and shipping should begin in about two weeks.
