Chinese accessories manufacturer Vaxis has recently expanded their 95mm filters lineup specifically designed for the Tilta Mirage matte box. Three new circular Black Mist filters with different intensities are now available for pre-order for $64.99 each.
Back in September we covered the release of the new Tilta Mirage, a product that focuses on compactness and lightness. This new motorized matte box introduced a new 95mm circular filter standard without sacrificing support for classic 4×5.65” rectangular filters.
Soon after this release, Chinese manufacturer Vaxis started developing a series of 95mm circulars filters specifically designed for the Tilta Mirage. This family, which already includes many ND and VFX options, is now growing with the introduction of three new Black Mist filters. Let’s take a closer look.
Straight out of the box, the Tilta Mirage can host a standard 4×5.65” rectangular filter as well as a 95mm circular one. This unusual filter standard is what allows the whole system to be extremely light.
In fact, these circular filters are lighter (and cheaper) than the standard 4×4” or 4×5.65” ones. Moreover, the Mirage can be broken down to just the circular filter tray, while still retaining the ability to wirelessly control the variable ND filter.
It’s worth noticing that Tilta didn’t drop the rectangular filter standard in favour of the new 95mm circular filters. Instead, both standards work together to ensure greater flexibility.
While Tilta offers a 9-stop VND (from 0.3 to 2.7), third-party manufacturer Vaxis quickly adapted to the new circular standard.
Indeed, the Vaxis VFX 95mm filter lineup has grown quite considerably over a very short period of time. The company’s offering currently includes the following filters:
The latest addition to the family is a circular Black Mist filter which comes in three different intensities: 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8. When mounted in front of the lens, this filter reduces highlights and lowers contrast, thus providing a slightly softer look overall.
Each filter only weighs 30g which is less than one fourth of the weight of its 4×5.65” counterpart.
The new Vaxis VFX 95 Black Mist filters are now available for pre-order on B&H for $64.99 each. In the box, you will find an Alcantara leather pouch for additional protection.
