D3200 – Nikon could have made the perfect $699 HDSLR, but…

As far as I know this was the first year stills image company Nikon actually had a booth at the the NAB video exhibition. They presented their D800 clean-hdmi-out HDSLR and later into the show also announced their new entry level Nikon D3200 HDSLR.
The camera comes with an APS-C sized sensor, 1080p movie recording at 24/25/30p, manual audio controls (not during recording), but no headphone jack and no clean hdmi-out at 1080p.

Why? I received a straight answer from another Nikon representative: “Because then there wouldn’t be a reason to buy the D800”

It looks like Nikon just missed the jackpot, again and everybody will continue to buy HDSLRs from Canon who seems to observe more closely and can set a high pricepoint as there’s little competition.

As Steve Jobs used to say “If you don’t cannibalize yourself, someone else will,”, and seeing all the new cameras coming out recently I think Nikon better shape up their strategy soon.
