Last year saw us many advances in filmmaking technology. 2013 brought us 4k, it brought us the pro-consumer aerial photography devices, and it brought us multi-axis camera stabilizers.

Since the announcement of the revolutionary Freefly MōVI stabilizer, we’ve seen an abundance of like-minded products popping up. It’s easy to lose track of which one does what and for what price and weight range.

One thing is for sure is that this is just the beginning; most are still in the pre-production stages/shipping in small numbers. We’re yet to see the Ghost officially surface, the DEFY G5 has a 10-12 week wait for new orders, similar story to the MōVI M5 also (ships end of January); only the MōVI M10 seems to have reached full shipment to our knowledge. 2014 will see these devices reach more impartial filmmakers, so we’ll get a much better perspective on how well all these products perform against each other.

Here is another product to add to the mix, the ShadowCam S5. Again it’s a product in the pre-order status but is said to meet a March release date. We’re only graced with 3D models but I love the look of this design:

The portability factor of this fold away design and the bolt on shoulder rig could prove to be big sellers, this is one to keep an eye on for sure.

The ShadowCam S5 is a “worlds first 5-axis stabilizer” utilizing brushless silent motors with horizontal and vertical dampening.

It weighs 1.4kg, folds down to 40x30x13cm (16”x12”x5”) and has a maximum drive load of 8kg. That’s impressive, for reference that’ll support a low rigged RED EPIC.

The ShadowCam S5 will cost £3995 + VAT at release date, but pre-ordering now will save up to 15%.

ShadowCam has also listed a few other interesting future products, including a simplified handheld 3-axis stabilizer minus the dampening.
