SANDMARC has just launched a new 100mm Macro lens specifically designed for iPhone shooters. This lens will give you a much closer focusing distance of only 53mm/2.08in compared to the iPhone’s built-in camera, which has a minimum focusing distance of 200mm/7.8in. So let’s take a closer look at this additional lens for smartphones!
SANDMARC, founded in 2013, is a San Diego-based company dedicated to creating smartphone and camera accessories for filmmakers and content creators on the go. From lenses to filters, travel tripods to mounts, SANDMARC has developed a solid lineup of products over the years.
After the recent launch of their 58mm telephoto lens for iPhone smartphones, SANDMARC is back with another lens: a Macro 100mm lens.
First, the SANDMARC Macro 100mm lens is compatible with all iPhone models: the lens comes with a dedicated case depending on your smartphone model. Indeed, while the latest iPhone 13 Pro/iPhone 14 Pro features a built-in macro mode, the other models don’t have any macro capabilities.
However, even if you have one of the latest models, this 100mm Macro lens can be helpful. The iPhone 13 Pro and 14 Pro use the wide-angle camera to create macro images, so the depth of field and background are not very compressed.
If you use the SANDMARC lens on the iPhone 14 Pro, for example, you’ll first benefit from the extra 48MP resolution instead of 12MP; second, the background will be much more compressed as you’re going through a “real” macro lens.
Another advantage of using this 100 Macro lens in front of your iPhone’s camera is that it reduces the minimum focusing distance. The lens on the iPhone 13/14 Pro has a minimum focusing distance of 200mm/7.8in, and the SANDMARC lens will reduce the minimum focusing distance to 53mm/2.08in.
The lens comes with a protective case that fits your iPhone model, and the 100mm Macro screws directly into the back of the case. The lens has a 48mm/1.88in diameter and weighs 114g/4oz, so it better be securely attached to your smartphone. If you’re using a different case with your smartphone, the lens also comes with a clip-on mount.
In terms of lens and optical design, SANDMARC claims they are using multi-coated and multi-element glass, but there is no more information about it.
The SANDMARC Macro 100mm lens is available now for $129.99. In the box, you’ll find the Macro lens, an iPhone case, the clip-on mount, a lens pouch, and front/back lens caps.
