Accessory manufacturer MID49 has recently introduced four audio breakout boxes that are designed to convert your camera’s audio input connector into two standard, full-size XLRs. The four different versions ensure compatibility with a variety of cinema cameras from ARRI, RED, Z CAM, and Canon.
Co-founded by Ryan Schorman – former president at Wooden Camera – MID49 is a newborn company that focuses on producing high-end camera accessories, such as baseplates, monitor arms, rods, handles, and more.
We recently reported about their Baseline 15mm LW Baseplates for RED KOMODO, BMPCC, and Canon Cinema Line cameras. Now, the company is coming up with a compact XLR adapter to expand your camera’s audio capabilities. Let’s take a look!
MID49’s new audio breakout boxes are passive adapters that convert your camera’s native audio input into two full-size XLR inputs. They come in four different flavors – AB-1, AB-2, AB-3, and AB-4 – to fit a wide range of cameras.
The main difference between the four models is the type of connector that goes into your camera:
Each breakout box integrates a 1/4”-20 screw with an anti-twist rubber pad to attach it to a camera cage, for example. Alternatively, you can mount the accessory using the optional Breakout Box Side Mounting Bracket, which attaches to the breakout box via two M4 screws and to your rig via a 3/8”-16 screw with ARRI locating pins.
Depending on the model, cable length varies between 20cm/8” and 30.5cm/12”, but custom lengths are also available upon request. The accessory is pretty compact and lightweight, measuring 35 x 277 x 28mm / 1.36×10.91×1.09” and weighing only 42g/1.5oz (AB-4 is a tiny bit larger and heavier).
MID49’s new audio breakout boxes are available to purchase from the manufacturer’s website and are now shipping. All four versions share the same official retail price of $175. Finally, the Breakout Box Side Mounting Bracket can be purchased separately for $45.For more information, please visit MID49’s website here.
