LaCie’s new portable rugged drive features a display, built-in battery, 2TB of space and variety of connectors. LaCie DJI Copilot does not need a computer to backup data directly on location.

Announced during CES 2018, the LaCie DJI Copilot HDD does not sport the usual orange silver design known from their older products. The new drive is all grey and a bit smarter. It is designed to backup data by itself without being connected to a computer. There is a large black and white display on top of the drive which allows for file transfer management and a built-in battery which can even provide power for other devices. The connectivity is provided through USB-C, full-size USB port and an SD card slot.

The LaCie DJI Copilot includes an integrated cable to connect any smartphone or tablet to the drive. The enclosed cables are USB-C, microUSB or Lightning type to ensure all smartphones are supported. With connected device it is possible to manage file transfers or preview photos and videos through an accompanying app. The idea behind a cable connection instead of a wireless one is to enable faster and more reliable footage preview on a smartphone or tablet screen.

The display on top side of the drive should be as rugged and resilient as the rest of the drive – the whole device is splash-, dust- and drop-resistant. The battery should be able to last long enough to backup around 30 hours of 4K footage. Drive itself is a standard spinning drive and comes only in one size – 2TB. The LaCie DJI Copilot backup drive will be available in spring 2018 and its expected price is $349.
