Blackmagic Video Assist 12G Monitors Enable RAW Recording

New Blackmagic Video Assist 12G update features BRAW recording up to 4K/60 in 5 inch and 7 inch models, unlocking RAW recording for a range of cameras.

The Blackmagic Video Assist 12G has received a big update and is now capable of recording Blackmagic RAW up to 4K 60p from a number of video sources, and displaying HDR video.

Available in 5 inch and 7 inch models, both devices have 2 x 12G SDI inputs to receive up to DCI 4K/60p signals, as well as 2 x HDMI inputs up to 4K/60p too. It is possible to hot swap between the Sony type L series batteries during operation, and can record RAW onto SD cards too.

For extended recording, the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G  has a USB-C connector to record onto external SSD drives or flash drives too. Ideal for recording in uncompressed RAW formats or for extended periods of time.

Both monitors are rated at 2500 nit high brightness, with a wide colour gamut HDR display, custom scopes and picture in picture modes. 3D LUT support is built in, and it is now possible to scrub through recordings on the timeline, and jog through footage by sliding left and right across the footage.

Like previous models, it’s possible to record in ProRes and DNx flavours too. The chassis is stronger, with multiple mounting points.

With the latest BRAW 1.5 update, the Video Assist devices expand the recording possibilities outside of compressed formats. However at present, this is only possible over SDI. Blackmagic Design are currently working to bring this over HDMI too, as opening this up to cameras using a HDMI output would be extremely popular.
