Blackmagic Design have been keeping busy this summer (or winter in their native Australia). With monthly updates coming in fast (a big one in May, and two smaller ones in June and July), it was only a matter of time until 18.5 would be out of beta. And that time is now!
The release of a new version of DaVinci Resolve is always quite a public affair with months of beta releases ahead of the final release – with many of the beta releases actually still adding new features to the app as we go along. But now the time has come, DaVinci Resolve 18.5 is out of beta, the final version is available for download.
You can now download 18.5 from within the program – you will get a pop-up message reminding you that a new update is available once you start the program. Up until now, you had to download the beta version from Blackmagic’s website.
Some of the biggest draws of version 18.5 are the new AI features. The audio transcription functionality alone will save you hours of work if you do a lot of interviews. Check out our quick tip here:
The creation of subtitles is also much easier using the new AI subtitle tool. Here is our quick tip about this feature:
Both of these new functionalities are worth the price of admission alone, but there is much more included. It’s now possible to have the Neural Engine analyze your audio clips and put them in bins according to their content (e.g. Music, Dialogue, Crowd Noise, etc.), for example. There are numerous additions to the Color page like the Relighting feature and USD support on the Fusion page.
Here is the full list of all the new things found in this version of DaVinci Resolve according to Blackmagic Design:
If all this makes you want to make the jump and upgrade to the new version, make sure to read our article on what to do before upgrading so you won’t lose any of your work should something go wrong. As usual, it might even be worth waiting a bit to see first user reports on stability, performance, and compatibility before making the jump yourself.
If you are just getting started in Resolve, check out our article on the best resources to get you going. We are also about to release a brand new 6 hour “Beginner’s Guide to DaVinci Resolve 18.5” by Ollie Kenchington on our education platform MZed very soon. We will also continue posting our quick tips on our YouTube channel to give you a great start with the program.
Will you make the jump to DaVinci Resolve now? Are you a longtime user and excited about the new features? Let us know in the comments below!
