Eon Electronics, a Californian company specializing in consumer electronics, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to back up the MagDisk, a portable SSD and power bank that is MagSafe, Qi2 compatible.
Ever since Apple launched the iPhone 15 Pro series with its amazing filmmaking capabilities, the number of products to make it a complete filmmaking tool has vastly increased – lenses, cages, hard drives, cables, you name it. While many of them are optional, if you want to record Apple ProRes LOG, you need to do it externally, and it was only a matter of time before some of these new releases would incorporate more functions and features to stand out from the competition. Let’s see what the MagDisk SSD offers.
The MagDisk is a portable SSD available in capacities of 512GB, 1, 2, and 4 TBs, with a read and write speed of up to 2000 MB/s, and it connects via a USB-C 3.2 20Gbps port. With these features, the MagDisk can perfectly record Apple ProRes Log 4K60. In numbers, the 512GB model can record 34 minutes in this format, and the 4TB can store up to 278 minutes. MagDisk recommends utilizing the USB Type-C cable provided, as non-original cables may lead to the device not being recognized or a decline in performance.
Although those are the specs that any portable SSD would present, what makes the MagDisk different is that it is also a Power bank with a capacity of 2400mAh in the 512GB model and 1500 Mac in the 1TB model. As these models contain smaller SSDs inside the structure, they have the space for the power bank – the 2TB and 4TB don’t have this feature.
The wireless power bank provides cable-free charging for your iPhone to ensure the battery life won’t be a problem during a shooting. Being Qi2 compatible allows for more efficient and faster charging than the conventional Qi standard. Its compatibility with MagSafe is another feature that makes the Magdisk a different SSD solution.
Another cool feature is the compatibility with Apple Find My, ensuring you can track your MagDisk after pairing it with your iPhone via the Find My app. Talking about compatibility, even though the MagDisk has been designed with the iPhone 15 Pro in mind, and you will take full advantage of its features by doing so, it also works with Android, Mac, Windows, cameras, iPad, etc.
The MagDisk is forged from aluminium alloy, looking for a balance between strength and weight (45 to 75 grams, depending on the model). The alloy is corrosion-resistant and offers UV protection, improving MagDisk’s durability. The MagDisk also features a heat dissipation system, and its Dynamic Thermal Guard monitors and keeps optimal temperatures for stable operation.Â
EON remarks they designed the MagDisk with durability in mind, and they will release regular firmware updates to extend MagDisk’s functionality. The company will also offer replacement and service programs as a commitment to maximize MagDisk’s lifespan.
The MagDisk estimated delivery is March 2024, the 512GB model sells for $109, and the 1TB model costs $159. If you are interested in backing up MagDisk, please visit this link and look at the options available.
As always, please remember that backing a project on a crowdfunding platform has its risks. Shipping delays, changes in the final product, or even undelivered products are real possibilities. Please read carefully Kickstarter’s terms and conditions before backing a project.
What do you think about this MagDisk SSD? Would you use one as a part of your iPhone 15 Pro setup? Let us know in the comments!
