EWA Marine UBZ
I got a chance to try out the EWA Marine underwater housing with the 7D last weekend. It was a shoot for a holiday window display for Velocity Filmworks. The underwater housing is as simple as it gets. The housing is a bag with a metal clip at the top with three tie down screws. The lens port will accommodate most zoom lenses. It comes with a 77mm screw in metal step up ring with a rubber gasket to keep the lens in place. The gasket comes off easily so it must be re-adjusted constantly.
Zooming is easier than adjusting focus, the heavy plastic material is unsuited for minute lens adjustments, so it’s set it and forget it. I was shooting with a 24-70 zoom at first until the long zoom barrel became a pain in the ass and kept re-adjusting itself. I switched over to the 17-35mm Zoom with success. No retracting barrel on this lens. Taped off the zoom and focus and was ready to shoot. I rented this time but I am considering buying one. At $350 street price, this could be a valuable tool in any camera arsenal. It’s made in Germany, so it’s got to be good. Now I only need to learn how to swim.
