The new KipperTie RISA R-XL is a camera-specific top plate designed for RED’s flagship production-oriented camera, the V-RAPTOR XL. It features endless 1/4”-20 and 3/8”-16 mounting points as well as a passive pass-through for the camera’s pogo pins. It retails for £265.
While plenty of manufacturers like GDU, 8Sinn, Tilta, IgniteDigi, Modern Film Tools, and more already produce accessories for the standard V-RAPTOR body, choices for the studio-oriented V-RAPTOR XL remain limited.
Third-party accessory, KipperTie, is mainly known for producing RED-oriented accessories, like their Strata-PL and Strata PL-ND bolt-on mount adapters for the standard V-RAPTOR body. The company recently came up with a top plate for the “XL” model that sports a smart design. Let’s take a closer look!
The new KipperTie RISA R-XL is a fully featured top plate that is specifically designed for the studio-oriented V-RAPTOR XL and the new V-RAPTOR XL S35 camera. It is not compatible with the standard RED V-RAPTOR 8K VV or the V-RAPTOR 8K S35.
The plate is built of anodized aerospace-grade aluminum and attaches directly to the top of the camera body via 1/4”-20 stainless steel screws. The plate wraps around the top vent nicely, leaving enough space for air to flow, while still giving access to the camera’s D-Tap outputs and doesn’t obstruct the wireless antennas.
What sets the RISA R-XL apart from existing options, such as Vocas’ top plate, for example, is that KipperTie’s accessory has a passive pass-through for the camera’s top pogo pins. According to the company, this makes it the only top plate to be fully compatible with RED’s original handle accessories and monitor mount.
The cheese-style design integrates several 3/8”-16 mounting holes with locating pins and many 1/4”-20 threads for attaching additional accessories. The centers of the 1/4″-20 holes are either 9mm or 10mm apart and two of them are aligned with the focus plane.
The new KipperTie RISA R-XL top plate for RED V-RAPTOR XL is now available to order from the manufacturer’s website. The official retail price is set at £265.00 (approximately $325).For more information, please visit KipperTie’s website here.
