The Nodal One adapter is a focal reducer designed for use with PL-mount cinema lenses. It provides a 0.71x wider field of view, offers a 1-stop increase in exposure, and a user-interchangeable mount. The crowd-funding campaign for this product is now live on Indiegogo.
Nodal is a Californian brand founded by cinematographer Joshua Chiara. The company has just launched a crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo to fund the production of the first batch of Nodal One.
This is a focal reducer for PL mount cinema glass that appears to compete directly with products such as Metabones’ PL to RF T Cine Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x. Let’s take a closer look!
The Nodal One is a 0.71x focal reducer that allows you to take advantage of a wider field of view when using large-format or full-frame PL mount lenses on camera bodies equipped with a crop-size sensor.
Additionally, you also gain approximately a full stop of light when you use the adapter. This makes it a nice solution for users looking to make the best out of their glass – whether it be vintage or modern, spherical or anamorphic.
The adapter has a user-interchangeable mount that is removed simply by loosening a few screws. However, the accessory is currently only compatible with camera bodies featuring a Canon RF lens mount, as it was initially designed specifically for the RED KOMODO 6K. Nonetheless, the company plans to introduce additional mount options in the future, including Sony E, FUJIFILM X, and Micro Four Thirds mount.
According to the company, they successfully tested the compatibility of the Nodal One PL mount focal reducer with the following lenses:
Anamorphic
Spherical
Before shipping, every unit is fine-tuned to infinity focus. However, if you ever need to make adjustments, the adapter comes with a set of shims. Lastly, the bottom part of the accessory features a 1/4”-20 threaded mount that can be used to connect the adapter to rods or cages, thus providing additional support and preventing lens wiggle.
The Nodal One PL to RF Mount Focal Reducer is now available to purchase via the company’s Indiegogo campaign for $799/€748. The adapter should start shipping around November 2023.
We say this at the end of every crowdfunding-related article: Be aware of the risks when backing a project on a crowdfunding platform. Please read the platform’s terms of use and keep in mind that there can be significant delays when delivering the product.
