Industry-leading research tool ShotDeck is once again putting on its Recreations Contest. This time they have prepared over 30,000.00 USD in prizes from sponsors like Sony, Aputure, Blackmagic, Zeiss and Tiffen. The contest is already open for entries.
Apart from the ShotDeck Recreation Contest, we have reported on ShotDeck before. In a nutshell: on ShotDeck you can search for image references from movies, to share and communicate aesthetic visions with your team. The search works either by movie title, or by a whole slew of criteria like Genre, Color, Aspect Ratio, Time of Day, Lighting, Shot Type and more. From there you can build decks with pictures, share them with your team, export them, archive them, and much more. Currently the database features 318,049 shots from 2,018 titles. ShotDeck was created and is headlined by Lawrence Sher ASC, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer of Joker, and many other movies you might have seen (Godzilla, Hangover, Garden State, Due Date, Paul, The Big Year …).
The ShotDeck Recreation Contest works as follows: participants are challenged to choose and recreate one beautiful shot from a movie in the database. A jury of industry-leading filmmakers will then award prizes in over 20 categories, such as “Most Ambitious”, “Best Lighting”, “Best Makeup” and many more. The panel consists of director Todd Phillips, Academy-Award-winning DPs Greig Fraser (ASC, ACS) and Erik Messerschmidt (ASC), Natasha Breier (ASC, ADF) and surprise celebrity judges.
Now, like any good contest, the ShotDeck Recreation Contest tries to motivate its participants with some extraordinary prizes. This year, ShotDeck managed to create an impressive package of prizes from brand sponsors. Sony, Blackmagic, Aputure, Zeiss, Tiffen, Roscoe, SmallHD and others have indeed contributed some major draws for participants such as:
