Sigma announces mount conversion service

Sigma has announced plans for offering a new service where they will convert the mount of your lens with hope of increasing the longevity of your investment.

With this new service, future proofing your lens collection (with regards to it’s lens mount) can become a less important factor. You’ll now be able to convert your Sigma lens to Sigma, Sony, Pentax, Nikon or Canon mounts (providing Sigma already offer the lens in the desired lens mount).

It’s a service offered only to lenses that are part of Sigma’s newest line, Global Vision. For those who haven’t caught up with Sigma’s latest offerings, the Global Vision line offer a new sleek black appearance, and are all categorized into 3 areas of photography; Sport, Art and Contemporary. All Global Vision lenses sport an initial on the barrel respective of what category they fall into.

If I’m honest I’m not a huge fan of this labelling, I don’t really see the point. One type of lens can be suitable for many different situations. I can’t imagine anyone pondering over a lens choice wishing they’d marked their lenses by genre to make selection in the field easier.

That aside, Sigma has been producing some very promising lenses recently. Notably the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, currently the fastest zoom lens on the market.

Other lenses in this line that are applicable for the service as quoted by Canonrumors:

“Current, applicable full-frame lenses include the 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS Sport and 35mm F1.4 DG Art; APS-C crop sensor lenses include the 30mm F1.4 DC HSM Art, 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC OS Macro Contemporary and 18-35mm F1.8 DC Art; and MILC lenses include the 19mm F2.8 DN Art, 30mm F2.8 DN Art and 60mm F2.8 DN Art. Lenses can be converted to any mount of a photographer’s choosing, as long as Sigma has released that product in the requested mount.”

The cost of the service will range from $80-250 plus shipping depending mount and lens.
