Anamorphic lenses have been popular for a long time. Primarily used in Hollywood movies and especially loved for their stylish flares, they also have a reputation for not being the most practical choice. SIRUI has set out to change this with the Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x.

Anamorphic lenses used to be rental-only pieces of glass for a long time. But, thankfully for independent content creators, some companies like SIRUI made owning genuine anamorphic lenses a dream come true.

A couple of months ago, SIRUI launched the JUPITER 1.6x full-frame anamorphic lenses on Indiegogo and the campaign was successfully funded (at 11.832% if we want to be precise!). We also had a chance to take a first look at the 35mm, 100mm, and anamorphic adapter during IBC 2022.

Now SIRUI is back with the Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x, a lighter full-frame anamorphic lens that you can mount on a drone or the DJI Ronin 4D.

SIRUI Saturn 35mm features

The SIRUI Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x Carbon Fiber anamorphic lens is available in Sony E-Mount, Canon RF, and DJI’s DL mount. Although the weight of the lens varies by mount, all versions come in at 425g/0.94lbs or less. In addition, some parts of the lens barrel are made of carbon fiber to keep the weight down to a minimum.

At a length of about 10cm/3.94in, it is very compact – the company’s marketing materials aptly compare the SIRUI Saturn 35mm’ size to a smartphone. The lens has a front filter thread of 58mm, manual aperture, and focus rings with industry-standard 0.8mod gears. Also, the focus ring has a focus throw of 120°.

Lens design

On the optical side of things, the SIRUI Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x has a minimum focusing distance of 0.9m/3ft. The lens design consists of 18 elements in 13 groups, ten aperture blades, and the aperture can go from T2.9 to T16.

The SIRUI Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x has a squeeze factor ratio of 1.6x. The squeeze ratio is constant, meaning objects don’t change in size while changing focus. On a 3:2 sensor 1.6x ratio will work out to a 2.4:1 aspect ratio, while on a 16:9 sensor, it will result in 2.8:1. Interestingly, the lens is available in two versions, one producing blue flares and the other “normal” lens flares.

The SIRUI Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x Carbon Fiber anamorphic lens is available now on SIRUI’s website. The lens comes with a pouch and warranty card.
