SmallHD has just announced the 703 Bolt, a new 7” monitor in collaboration with Teradek. The monitor/wireless team fusion gives us a sleek handheld 7″ monitor with built in Teradek Bolt receiver.
The 703 Bolt utilizes a very similar panel to SmallHDs current flagship 7” monitor, the 703 UltraBright. All physical features remain the same – SDI/HDMI IN/OUT, joystick and 5 hot keys on the front face.
However the 703 Bolt boasts an even brighter 3000 cd/m² screen, at the cost of an 8-bit panel (over 10 on the 703 UltraBright), and a gnat’s lower contrast ratio and viewing angle.
The USP on the 703 Bolt is the seamlessly integrated Bolt wireless receiver; with the 3 antennas removed you’d be hard pressed to notice a difference from a standard monitor; the 703 Bolt remains sleek in design.
Said 3 antennas sit on the top of the monitor, with lovely looking antenna plate (not a top handle) to protect threads.
As a wireless receiver, the 703 Bolt is good for up to 300’ range and is currently compatible with the Teradek Bolt 500, 1000 and 3000 transmitters.
There are optional “hassle free” lightweight monitor handles, one per side.
In terms of power, there’s a 2-pin LEMO on the rear, and you’ll be able to purchase plates for popular battery systems such as V Lock or Gold Mount.
Why/who would want this? SmallHD bill the 703 Bolt suitable for Directors, ACs, Lighting reference and receivers for larger monitor setups.
I can certainly see a place for this in the Directors Monitor market; it’s one scenario on set where tech meets an often non-tech (or less tech) person – the less cables/weight/things to go wrong on a mobile directors setup, the better.
The 703 Bolt carries the large catalogue of exposure/focus features found in latest software package from SmallHD, check out our article here on the latest firmware for more info.
Spec list:
SmallHD are shipping the 703 Bolt imminently in two main packages (plus battery plate options) – with and without the lightweight monitor handles.
