Turning a Canon HDSLR on and off is a real pain when using a shoulder rig. The location of the record button is great if you are shooting stills, but if you are rocking a shoulder rig you will have to reach around to get to the button and re-balance the rig for every take. I have been using the Switronix Flex Remote for some time to solve this issue, however it is not cheap at around $150 US.
Tony Reale of Next Wave DV has come up with a nifty solution for this nagging problem for about ten bucks. He uses an aftermarket infrared remote switch from eBay, some fiber optic cable and a coat hanger to fashion a crude remote for Canon HDSLR’s. This is a great way to save some coin for the important stuff, like lenses.
