Popular accessory manufacturer Tilta has announced a price increase for a whole range of its products. This is a direct result of the ongoing (and global) chip shortage we are currently experiencing. And since this crisis obviously doesn’t just affect a single company like Tilta, other manufacturers might follow suit.
This is just a really quick heads-up about what’s going on in the industry – not just, but also, of course, in filmmaking. Global supply chains are irritated due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and in a world of just-in-time business, this is having a major impact.
The current chip shortage is just one aspect of what we are experiencing. Graphics cards are selling for incredible sums, and overall, anything with a silicon chip in it (and that’s a lot of things) is facing supply shortages around the world. The same is true for a huge amount of other accessories.
Chinese manufacturer Tilta has just announced a vast list of products they are increasing in price due to the aforementioned economic impacts. Their official press release reads as follows:
Like all of us, we’re glad to be getting back on track after a difficult year, however, the pandemic left its mark on the manufacturing industries, and some of the materials that we use are not available at the same price due to supply constraints. We’ve worked hard to adjust the price to make it as small as possible.
Tilta has compiled a list of all products that are affected by this price increase. The following list goes into effect on June 17. Tilta again:
The majority of price increases are between a 10-20%, with a few exceptions. Orders made before this time will be at the original price until that 6/17. The new price change will come into effect on June 17, 2021.
This is a screenshot from the press release. So be sure to head over to Tilta’s website, as the original list also includes links to the individual products.
Of course, this is all pretty bad news for us, the customers. On the other hand, this move by Tilta was kind of predictable, I think. And since Tilta is not the only company in this field, others might follow. In fact, I’m pretty sure others will have to follow suit.
So maybe it’s a good time to buy that item you’ve had your eye on for some time before the price increase takes effect. Of course, I can’t predict the future and I don’t know where it will all take us, so please don’t hold me responsible for your buying decisions.
