Tilta Camera Cage for Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 is Now Available

The Tilta camera cage for Canon EOS R5 and R6 is now available for purchase. Available in black or grey colors for $99, it includes inner padding to protect the camera body, a variety of threaded holes, cold shoe mount on top, turning wheel, optional HDMI clamp, a lens adapter mount, and it is compatible with Tilta handles.

Last year in summer, Canon announced its new full-frame mirrorless cameras based on the RF lens mount – Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6. Shortly after the announcement, these two camera bodies were discussed quite a lot. While being very capable still cameras, their video functionality got crippled by overheating. In regards to the EOS R5, while overheating was really a limiting issue when the camera just came out, it got much better with time and firmware updates (see Johnnie’s review of the R5 with the updated firmware).

Tilta Camera Cage for Canon EOS R5 and R6

Tilta now finally releases the camera cage for both Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6. Interestingly, the cooling accessory that Tilta announced over a year ago is currently nowhere to be found on Tilta’s website. Either the company abandoned its development as Canon made the cameras more usable with firmware updates, or it still needs more time to be developed. Either way, the aluminum camera cage fits both cameras and it comes either in black or grey color.

The Tilta camera cage has built-in silicone padding on top and bottom to protect the camera body. There is a threaded mounting hole for lens adapter support as well as multiple 1/4″-20 threaded holes for accessories. On top, there is an additional cold shoe mount for accessories with threaded holes and locating pins.

Interestingly, there is a turning wheel incorporated into the cage itself which touches the camera’s top turning wheel that would otherwise be covered by the cage. A potential issue that I can see with this, is that by adding one more wheel, the direction of the camera’s turning wheel will be reversed. That can mess up the user’s muscle memory in some cases. I am not sure whether the direction of the wheel can be changed in the camera settings.

The cage weighs 242g (8.54oz) and its dimensions are 159.7 x 124.2 x 71mm (6.29 x 4.89 x 2.80″). It is, of course, compatible with the variety of Tilta’s top handles, side handles, base plates, and other accessories. Tilta also offers an HDMI cable clamp that fits the ports of both cameras and can be attached to the cage.

Price and Availability

Tilta camera cage for EOS R5 and R6 is available now. The price for the bare cage is $99. Tilta also offers a pre-configured kit that includes the cage with a top handle, HDMI clamp, full-size HDMI adapter, and quick release plates for Manfrotto and Arca-Swiss for $149. The rest of the accessories have to be purchased separately.
