Third-party accessories manufacturer Tilta has just announced a new interesting side storage handle; the Tilta CFexpress Type A to M.2 side storage handle. This add-on accessory is currently only compatible with Sony A1/A7S III/A7 IV mirrorless cameras and the Sony FX3 cinema camera. The handle consists of a built-in 512GB M.2 SSD and a CFexpress Type A memory card adapter but also doubles up as a USB-C card reader. Let’s take a closer look at it!
After the recent launches of the Tilta Lightweight Shoulder Rig, the Pocket Follow Focus, and a series of dedicated accessories for DJI RS 2/RS 3 Pro gimbals, the company is back with an external storage solution for Sony cameras: the Tilta CFexpress Type A to M.2 side storage handle.
The Tilta CFexpress Type A to M.2 side storage handle is a 100g/3.5oz aluminum and stainless steel attachment compatible with the Sony FX3, Sony A1/A7S III/A7 IV.
The storage handle attaches to your camera via one 1/4″-20 screw at the bottom and one 1/4″-20 screw on the right side. Furthermore, the storage handle has a built-in Arca-Swiss plate and multiple 1/4″-20 mounting points at the bottom of the storage handle.
But, all the magic is on the side of this L-shaped storage handle. Indeed, a “dummy” CFexpress Type A memory card is inserted into your camera and sends all your footage to the handle’s built-in 512GB M.2 SSD.
According to Tilta, the M.2 SSD has a maximum write speed of 700 MB/s that supports all 4K All-Intra recording formats.
On the side of the storage handle, you’ll also find a USB Type-C port. This port is the built-in Type-C card reader that supports USB3.2 Gen2*2 20Gbps data transfer. Lastly, the storage handle has an SSD recording indicator and a USB connection indicator.
The main advantage of this Tilta CFexpress Type A to M.2 side storage handle is that, even if CFexpress Type A memory cards prices are slowly starting to get more affordable, the price per GB ratio of the Tilta attachment is hard to beat at only $1.46/GB.
For example, at the time of writing this article, a Sony 160GB CFexpress Type A TOUGH memory card retails for $358, which means $2.23/GB.
The Tilta CFexpress Type A to M.2 side storage handle is available to preorder for $675 – a 10% saving on the regular $750 retail price – and it should start shipping in 2-3 weeks.
