Rode VideoMic GO – On-camera battery-less mic

Last week we posted about the battery-less microphone from Tascam for a cost effective on-board audio solution. Now, Rode has released a similar entry-level mic to add to their line up.

The Rode Videomic Go is a cost effective, lightweight (2.6 oz) shotgun mic, designed to sit on the hot shoe of your camera. Like the Tascam TM 2X, this microphone requires no batteries; it runs off plug-in power provided by the 3.5mm jack on your compatible camera.

It’s a directional mic, with a super-cardioid polar pattern. It comes attached to a Rycote Lyre shock mount to reduce operating noise and bumps and shakes. In addition to the hot shoe mount, you also have a 3/8″ threaded hole for further application.

This product is designed to sit under Rode’s very popular VideoMic Pro, coming it at less than half the price of the Pro. Your costs are saved at the point of flexibility. The GO relies on plug-in in power, and does not have any adjustment settings. Where as the Pro is battery operated, offers a 3-way level control, and high pass filter. I think that’s a fair trade off, and with a price point of $99 the GO is sure to sell well.

Personally, it would’ve been nice to see the Rycote mount in black. One of the beauties of the VideoMic Pro is the small sleek design, offering a great solution for subtle and discreet shooting. The red (or slightly pink?) shock mount will definitely give your setup a louder presence.
